Gemma Anderson was born in Belfast (Northern Ireland) in 1981. In 2002 she worked as an artist on projects in North Wales and Nigeria before returning to the U.K to study Fine Art at Falmouth College of Art. In 2007 she graduated with a masters degree in printmaking from the Royal College of Art (London)

About her work Gemma Anderson Says "Drawing is the basis of all of my work. Line has an economy that lays comparisons bare and unifies an otherwise classified order. Through research, intution and observation I  explore the metaphors that plants, animals and objects offer on the human condition. As the distance we create between ourselves and the plant and animal world increases so does my fixation on the image of our innate relation and interdependence. I collage subjects according to resemblance of form, function and feeling to create allegorical portraits. Fearing homogeneity and longing to find and portray the obscure drives my work".

The distinctive line drawing she has developed led her to practice etching and her life size etchings are all drawn directly onto the plate from the subject and then elaborated on afterwards in the studio. Etchings on this scale are rare and rarer stil it is to find etchings drawn directly onto copper from life.

Anderson has shown at venues around London, Cornwall and Belfast and been awarded residencies in Cork, Venice, Belize, Nigeria and The Burren,(Co.Clare).
