Blek le Rat (Xavier Prou, born in 1951 in Paris, France) is the pioneer of stencil graffiti. Blek le Rat was introduced to graffiti on a trip to New York in 1971. Determined not to replicate what he had seen in New York he started to develop his own style of stencil graffiti. From 1971 to 1983 Blek le Rat studied etching, lithography, painting and architecture in Paris. Blek le Rat started to apply his own style of graffiti in Paris in 1981 and in 1983 he started to insert life-size motif's of people into the urban landscape. Blek le Rat has exhibited his work extensively throughout the world.
